She is an independent consultant in records, archives, and information management, and has also worked in publishing and distance education. For over three decades, she has worked with governments, universities, colleges, professional associations, non-profit organizations, and other agencies around the world. She helped national governments develop best practice strategies for records and archives management, and also advised First Nations’ communities in the Canadian arctic on methods for preserving indigenous sources of evidence.
She was named the winner of the Society of American Archivists' 2011 Waldo Gifford Leland Award for Archives: Principles and Practices, and the author of dozens of publications and conference presentations. She taught records and archives management in several universities in Canada and internationally. She is often asked to speak on the value of records, archives, and other sources of evidence for society.

She has taught editing, writing and information management at the such institutions as University of British Columbia, the University of Toronto, Simon Fraser University, and the University of Victoria. In 1984 she became the first graduate of UBC's Master of Archival Studies program, and she received her PhD in archival studies from the University of London in 1996.
